Capital Area Healthy Start Coalition

The Capital Area Healthy Start Coalition, Inc. (CAHSC) has been in operation for over 31 years, providing oversight of client services, community outreach and engagement, and in improving the lives of individuals and families in Leon and Wakulla Counties. The current direct client services programs under our umbrella are Healthy Start services, Coordinated Intake and Referral (CI&R), Sister Friends Tallahassee Birthing Project, Parents and Teachers, and T.E.A.M. Dad (Teaching, Empowering, Advocating, and Mentoring Dad) programs.

In March of 2023, we expanded CI&R program into Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare through the Connect Family Partner program. The Connect Family Partner brings the CI&R program directly to the hospital to work with families prior to being discharged with their newborn. The Connect Family Partner assesses the families risks and needs, provides education and resources to address the identified risks and needs, including the social determinants of health, and connects families to much needed resources
in our community.

CAHSC is the fiscal custodian for the Littles to Leaders Program in addition to providing the touch point with the prenatal care providers and the families prior to discharge from the hospital with their newborn.

Leon County Schools

Leon County Schools is a traditional school district that serves over 33,000 students ages three to twenty one years of age. In the 2021-2022 school year Leon County Schools received a B rating from the Florida Department of Education accountability system. In 2022 51% of kindergarten students demonstrated readiness for school on the statewide kindergarten readiness screener. Kindergarten readiness rates
have a direct correlation to third grade reading proficiency scores and ultimately predict graduation rates. Quality early learning experiences level the playing field for our most vulnerable learners setting them up for success and readiness in kindergarten and having lasting impact throughout their school
career.

90% of brain development occurs from birth to age 5. It is the mission of Leon County Schools through the Littles to Leaders project to equip parents with the necessary tools to be their child’s first teacher,
laying the foundation for kindergarten readiness during the critical years of brain
development. Superintendent Hanna is committed to being a partner in education from birth. Investing in our children early will yield positive long term impacts on both graduation rates and the workforce in our community.
